Acariformes

This is a large assemblage of mites and represents  a huge array of mites that are classified into nearly 400 separate families and well over 30,000 described species (with many many more waiting to be formally described).   Many of these mites are tiny (but not all), and are scarcely visible to the naked eye - however their ecological impact can be immense.    Notable members of this assemblage are the mites that give rise to scabies/mange in the family: Sarcoptidae (Sarcoptiformes); and the red velvet mites that resemble small bright red spiders that belong to the family Trombidiidae (Trombidiformes).
